If your Data
Center has been in a flood, here are a few things
you should know about the condition of the room.
Short-term exposure to water does not destroy the
raised access flooring or the cabling in your
computer room. Most tapes and computer equipment
recovered from floods can be restored if treated
promptly. Water, alone, cannot damage magnetic
recording on ferric oxide tapes. Contaminants and
chemicals such as chlorine and salts in flood water
can often do more immediate damage to a Data Center
than the water itself. Should you suspect that these
contaminants are present in your Data Center; the
room should be cleaned as soon as possible. Extended
exposure to water can eventually destroy a Computer
Room. The sooner you do something, the more likely
that your Data Center can be saved.

If it's a fire, the damage from smoke could be
destructive to computers and circuit boards if they are
not cleaned properly and in a timely manner. Smoke is
very acidic, and its corrosive attributes are harmful to
sensitive circuit boards. If it's a flood, the damage
from water could be detrimental to the equipment as well
as the sensitive controlled environment that houses your
corporate Data Center. The potential to develop specific
types of molds, bacteria and mildew is extremely high if
the Data Center is not properly cleaned and sanitized.
